MIAMI—Miami is on the move—and in more ways than one. Swire Properties just sealed deals to redesign and enhance the Eighth Street Metromover station as part of its $1.05 billion Brickell CitiCentre mixed-use development. Construction is set to begin on the mixed-use development in the Brickell Financial district later this year.

“Investments in public transit, such as the new Airport Link, are critical to enhancing downtown Miami’s livability and destination status,” Alyce Robertson, executive director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. “With these Metromover upgrades, Brickell CitiCentre is slated to become another anchor for Downtown’s thriving Brickell Financial District, enhancing the neighborhood’s 24/7 appeal among residents, businesses and visitors.”

After an extensive competitive public bid process and negotiation with Miami-Dade County staff, Swire’s project was formally approved by the Miami-Dade County Commission. The two-part compact with Miami Dade Transit provides for a land lease to Swire to integrate an adjacent parcel into the Brickell CitiCentre project.

An additional development agreement contemplates significant upgrades to the 8th Street Metromover station, enhancing its connection to Brickell CitiCentre and improving the landscaping under the Metromover guideway between southeast Sixth and Eighth Streets. Along with the upgrades to the Metromover station, the project will include two overhead pedestrian crossings spanning South Miami Avenue and Southeast Seventh Street.

Brickell Citi Centre is the largest registered urban mixed-use LEED Neighborhood Development projects currently being planned in the United States. The site is bounded by SW 8th Street on the south and SW 6th Street on the north and between Brickell Avenue on the east and SW 1st Avenue on the west. The original acquisition for Brickell CitiCentre was completed in 2008.

“Brickell CitiCentre will forge a new way of living in Miami, securing its emergence as a vibrant metropolis,” Stephen Owens, president of Swire Properties, said in a statement. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with Miami-Dade County on incorporating the Metromover station into the project so we may achieve our goal of creating a sophisticated urban center for Brickell.”

The $1.05 billion mixed-use complex will be built on nine acres along South Miami Ave. in downtown Miami and will offer approximately 2.8 million square feet of office, residential, hotel, and retail and entertainment space. The project is expected to create 1,700 jobs while under construction and 3,700 after completion.
