MIAMI—Construction will soon be underway on the City of Miami’s first Walmart store. The retail project will create a new option for residents who need jobs or want more affordable shopping in their neighborhood.

To be located at 6991 SW 8 St.—the former site of Everglades Lumber in Miami’s Flagami neighborhood, the Walmart Neighborhood Market site will also be home to a gas station and a TD Bank. Construction is set to begin next year with an anticipated opening in 2014.

“A Walmart in the city means our Miami customers will save time and money,” Steve Restivo, a senior director of Community Affairs at Walmart, tells GlobeSt.com. “Plus, our store will help deliver an added economic boost for the Flagami neighborhood by creating construction and retail jobs, generating revenue for the city and revitalizing a dormant property.”

Flagami hasn’t seen any significant development in about 10 years. It’s an ideal location for a Walmart because grocery options are limited in what is one of the most highly populated areas of Miami.

Planned for 54,000 square feet, the Walmart will be about one-third the size of a supercenter. The store will employ up to 100 people and feature fresh produce, meat and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods as well as a pharmacy, pet supplies and household items.

First opened in 1998, the retailer currently operates about 200 Walmart Neighborhood Markets across the country and plans to add 80 more nationally by Feb. 1, 2013.  The retailer has been operating stores in Miami-Dade County for 20 years and currently serves cities including Kendall, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, Miami Gardens, Homestead, Florida City, North Miami and Doral.
