Maybe all of these stores planning to stage big holiday sales on Thanksgiving Day isn't such a good idea after all. In the case of Walmart, workers could protest by going on strike at about 1,000 stores on Black Friday as retaliation, according to reports.

Stores impacted could be in large cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami. Walmart currently has plans to open its stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving this year.

The term "Black Friday" could start to loose a lot of its meaning as Walmart and others try to get people to come out on Thanksgiving to do their shopping. Target and Sears are also opening on Thanksgiving evening, while plenty of other major chains will open midnight on Black Friday.

Apparently some shoppers are taking this very seriously. An above-linked ABC News report interviewed a family that is camping out in front of a store and eating their Thanksgiving meal while waiting for its doors to open. We call that pretty twisted dedication to getting a good deal on a flat screen when a lot of retailers are offering many of the same sales online.

One MarketWatch columnist laments that retailers are ruining Thanksgiving, and she's right. Unless of course, a way for you to spend time with family and friends over the holiday is being crammed inside a big-box store with thousands of strangers clamouring for the same items on sale.

If Walmart workers, and those at other stores, actually do go on strike, it might end this silly retail tradition that has gone as far as push holiday shopping back to the summer practically.
