SAANICH, BC—A 160,000-square foot center designed specifically for seniors is going up here, thanks to a partnership between Baptist Housing, Vancouver-based Capital Region Hospital District and Vancouver Island Health Authority.
The seven-story building, dubbed the Heights at Mount View, will feature 220 apartments divided among 13 distinct “neighborhoods,” two of which will be dedicated to memory support rooms for approximately 40 residents.
According to architecture firm Perkins Eastman, based in San Francisco, the neighborhood concept is a groundbreaker itself, in that the neighborhoods, each with its own home-style kitchen, dining room and living area, are comprised entirely of private residential rooms. They say it's a “pioneering model” for the continuing care industry.
While people close to the deal would not provide more specifics, GlobeSt.com has learned that the project is being built on CRHD land, and the partnership will retain ownership. It will be leased “for a nominal fee” to Baptist Housing. The partnership is also funding the project, with CRHD kicking in just north of $18 million.
