BETHESDA, MD-Walker & Dunlop has hired Stephen P. Theobald as CFO. Theobald, who will be joining the company on April 1, is replacing Debbie Wilson, who is leaving the firm.

Theobald is currently executive vice president and CFO at Hampton Roads Bankshares. Prior to that, he has held several senior finance positions at Capital One including CFO of Local Banking from 2005 to 2010. In a prepared statement, Willy Walker, CEO of Walker & Dunlop, points to Theobald's diverse background as a plus as the company expands beyond its traditional footprint.

Indeed, Walker & Dunlop has been steadily pushing beyond its multifamily stronghold to grow its presence in new areas. It has been building out its bandwidth to originate loans on other commercial property types such as office, retail, hospitality, and industrial. It has also been pushing its geographic boundaries, expanding into the southwest and West. In an earnings call late last year, Walker told listeners that W&D expected to originate $3 billion to $5 billion annually in commercial mortgages through these channels.

In that same call, Walker noted that the company is also building out its proprietary capital solutions "so we are underwriting and lending on all commercial real estate asset classes…We are exploring various capital solutions to lend on the other asset classes, such as the mortgage REIT, institutional funds, and CMBS," he said.

The company plans to release its quarter and full year results on March 6th. Part of that release will likely provide more details about its student housing finance activities, a subsector of the multifamily space. W&D recently announced that in 2012, it provided $157.1 million in financing for off-campus student housing properties nationwide.
