MOBILE, AL-The Mobile Press-Register reports that the City of Mobile's Industrial Development Board has approved local tax abatements of $95 million to assist PowAir International Inc. in building a new headquarters and manufacturing facility. The development, which will be situated on a site at Brookley Aeroplex, could create 500 direct jobs within the next few years.

The Press-Register notes that start-up PowAir International signed an option to lease 35 acres at Brookley from the Mobile Airport Authority in 2011, but it's uncertain how much land the company would lease at this point. The proposed location of the company would be on the east side of Broad Street, across from the Fort Whiting Armory and just north of the US Coast Guard station.

PowAir International is a manufacturer of wind turbines and related items including blades and towers. The Press-Register says PowAir will be the second large investment in wind energy along the Gulf Coast. General Electric Co. opened a wind turbine assembly plant in Pensacola, FL in 2001.
