LITTLE FERRY, NJ-The Borough Council could be lifting rent control on vacant apartments. The new ordinance, which will be the subject of a public hearing next month, will not affect tenants who currently reside in the more than 1,300 rent-controlled apartments here.

The ordinance would take affect only after a lease has been terminated, according to Thomas Sarlo, a member of the Borough Council's Finance Committee.

"Any tenant who is subject to rent control right now will always have the protection of rent control, until they vacate the apartment," says Sarlo, who adds that the borough is also studying ways to make its commercial properties more attractive and  looking at future redevelopment along the waterfront in order to increase property valuations.
