MIAMI-The plan by Miami Beach to redevelop its convention center will now go to a public referendum.

The Miami Beach Board of Commissioners approved Mayor Matti Herrera Bower's request for a public vote on the initiative on Wednesday, according to the Miami Herald. The vote for a referendum followed a petition drive for a public vote launched by Commissioner Jonah Wolfson.

The city wants a team to rehabilitate its convention center as well as add a hotel and ballroom. Miami Beach is offering the land surrounding the convention center for private development including residential and retail.

The city is currently considering two development teams for the project: Portman CMC, which includes d Portman Holdings and Ugo Colombo, plus Cirque du Soleil and Bal Harbour Shops; and South Beach ACE, which includes developer Robert Wennett, the Tishman hotel group and architect Rem Koolhaas.
