NEW YORK CITY-After some harsh criticism from designers and architects, the Museum of Modern Art is considering the possibility of saving, rather than razing the former Folk Art Museum.

Officials from the Museum of Modern Art announced Thursday that the museum has hired the architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro to not only design the museum's planned expansion, but to consider incorporating the folk-art building into the design, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

In April, the museum announced its intention to raze the former Folk Art building, which it acquired in 2011, after the American Folk Art Museum defaulted on nearly $32 million in bond debt. The Museum of Modern Art had stated that the former Folk Art Museum building was incompatible with its expansion plans.

However, a number of architects and designers, including the Architectural League of New York, criticized the demolition plan. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
