FLORIDA CITY-A total of 22 lots in the “Snakepit” neighborhood here will be sold to Blue Heaven Villas LLC, which will build 100 apartments at the site.

The Florida City Community Redevelopment Agency plans to sell the lots on approximately 5.2 acres to the development firm, which bested DDA Development of Tampa for the project with a bid of $1.5 million for the property, according to the Miami Herald.

"Things take on a life based on what they're called, and Blue Heaven Villas sounds a lot nicer to me than 'Snakepit,'" says Florida City CRA Director Richard Stauts, who's been working on acquiring the parcels since 2008 to attract development. "We made it a major priority to improve this neighborhood.”

The Snakepit neighborhood is a blighted section of the city with some lots vacant since Hurricane Andrew ravaged the area in 1992. See story in the Miami Herald.
