SARASOTA-The Westfield Group says it intends to reposition the Southgate Mall here as more of a lifestyle center and plans to add new restaurant and entertainment space at the property.
The owner of Southgate Mall revealed its plans for the property at the International Council of Shopping Centers' Recon convention in Las Vegas on Monday. The plan calls for 46,000 square feet of new space that will be built in a parking lot facing Tamiami Trail, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The shopping center will undertake this plan to reshape the property as it prepares to lose anchor tenant Saks Fifth Avenue in 2014 to The Mall at University Town Center, which is slated for completion in October 2014. The Mall at University Town Center will also feature anchor tenants Macy's and Dillard's.
Construction work at the Southgate Mall will begin before the end of this year, according to Clive Mackenzie, Westfield's senior vice president of development. See story in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
