MIAMI-The Internal Revenue Service has hit the Miccosukee Indians with a $170-million tax lien in connection with the tribe's alleged failure to report and withhold taxes from its distribution of gaming profits from its casino off the Tamiami Trail to members of the tribe.

The IRS also has the tribe owing $58 million in connection with its alleged failure to pay personal income taxes on those gaming proceeds distributions from 2000 to 2005, according to the Miami Herald.

Commenting on the IRS actions, Miccosukee Indians Chairman Colley Billie said in a statement, “The Miccosukee people will continue to pay all applicable lawful taxes, as they always have, and we will continue our efforts to find a fair and workable solution to this dispute,''

Colley Billie added, “The Miccosukee people, however, will not be intimidated or coerced by these tax liens into surrendering tribal sovereignty or principles for which so many of our ancestors have paid a very high price in blood, lives, and tears.'' See story in the Miami Herald.
