SAN FRANCISCO-Illumina Inc. is said to have leased about 100,000 square feet in Mission Bay and it has plans to open a major research and development facility in the space.

The San Diego-based gene sequencing company will occupy 97,700 square feet at 499 Illinois St., half of a two-building development from Alexandria Real Estate Equities, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The developer says it reached a 10-year deal with “a leading mid-cap life science company with an equity market capitalization of approximately $7 billion to $10 billion,” but did not identify the company. The Times said real estate industry sources named Illumina.

The company will occupy 45 percent of the 219,000-square-foot building.
