WASHINGTON, DC-The JBG Cos. were issued a permit on Thursday to build the mixed-use Fort Totten Square development here that will include a new Walmart store.

The four-story building at 300 Riggs Road NE will include 287 residential units, the119,523-square-foot Walmart store, 9,860 square feet of other retail space and parking for 486 vehicles.

Unrelated to the permit issuance but in a matter that will likely impact large retailers in DC, the Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs approved a bill today requiring large retailers that gross a minimum of $1 billion in sales annually to pay their full- and part-time employees a "living wage" of $12.50 an hour. The bill now goes before the full council, which could begin deliberations on the proposal as early as next week.

With the Fort Totten location, there are now three Walmart stores under construction in the DC area. The other two are on Georgia Avenue NW and at 77 H St. NW. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
