HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL-Sears Holdings Corp. reports that it plans to convert some of its closed retail stores into data centers. Most of the data centers will be located in shuttered Kmart locations.

Sears launched Ubiquity Critical Environments, a new business unit under the direction of former Chicago Microsoft executive Sean Farney, earlier this year to redevelop 300 closed Sears and Kmart locations.

The first data center will be at the Sears store on 79th Street in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune. The 127,000-square-foot store is scheduled to close in July. Most of the data centers will be at former Kmart stores since they tend to be stand-alone properties, company officials say. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
