BELLEVUE, WA-Work was expected to begin today on a sprawling project that will convert a 36-acre industrial property to a mixed-use tech-office complex called the Spring District.

Developer Wright Runstad & Co. said last week that more than $2.3 billion will be invested for offices, hotels, and residences. The commercial development will be complemented by parks and a new light-rail station, according to a report in the Puget Sound Business Journal.

The Spring District property is east of downtown Bellevue. When completed, the project will be a neighborhood of tech offices, retail, residential and hotel buildings, parks and a light-rail stop.

Workers begin infrastructure work in February, clearing the way for construction of large apartment and office buildings. Seattle-based Wright Runstad and financial partner Shorenstein Properties of San Francisco paid for the 36 acres six years ago.

Another Seattle company, Security Properties, will build five four- to eight-story apartment buildings with a total of 316 units. Construction of the apartments is scheduled to start by June 2014, city officials said Friday.

The city has approved plans for one nine-story and one 11-story tower. The buildings total 491,000 square feet. Light rail service could be up and running by 2015.
