MIAMI—With demand for affordable housing on the rise across South Florida, Miami-based Carrfour Supportive Housing is teaming up with Pinnacle Housing Group to more units in Miami-Dade County. The joint venture are developing the Amistad Apartments housing community to serve the needs of formerly homeless and low-income families in Miami's Little Havana.

Scheduled to open in January 2014, Amistad will be located at 571 SW 9th Street in Miami and offer 89 affordable housing units. Forty-five units are designated for residents earning at or below 28% of the area's median income. These units are considered homeless housing. The remaining 44 units designated for residents earning 60% of the area's median income. These are considered affordable housing and low-income housing.

In response to a clear example of the desperate need for affordable housing throughout Miami, last Thursday, October 10, 2013, Carrfour—joined by Miami-Dade Commissioner Bruno Barreiro—held a lottery drawing at its corporate office for Amistad's 44 available affordable units after receiving more than 1,500 resident applications submitted to the organization over the last month.

Once Amistad is ready for occupancy, Carrfour will begin the screening process for its 45 remaining homeless units. The residents will be chosen from a waiting list process to ensure they meet the community's homeless unit requirements.

Rents at Amistad's low-income apartments range from approximately $660 for one-bedroom units; $787 for two-bedroom units; and $902 for three-bedroom units. Sixty-percent AMI requirements range from a one-person household earning $27,480; to an 8-person household earning $51,840.
