WASHINGTON, DC-NoMa's bona fides as an emerging office market have long been established. It has also attracted a number of apartment projects in recent years, with the most recent example being Camden NoMa's ribbon cutting last week. These are accomplishments not to be overlooked, but it is worth noting that the third leg of NoMa's three-pronged goal of becoming a work-live-play destination is also gaining momentum. Recently Landmark Theatres announced it will open a 10-screen cinema to the NoMa neighborhood as part of the Capitol Point project.
The JBG Cos. is developing this mixed-use development, located along New York Avenue at N Street NE. The project includes a 200-room Hyatt Place hotel currently under construction, more than 75,000 square feet of retail, 600 residential units and one million square feet of office space.
The movie theaters will be located just one block from the NoMa/Gallaudet U Metro station. They will occupy approximately 31,000 square feet and will open in fall 2016. In a prepared statement Robin-Eve Jasper, president of the NoMa Business Improvement District, says the organization is hearing from other retailers interested in the NoMa neighborhood "and they are going to do great here."
NoMa counts some 40,000 daytime employees and more than 18,000 people are living within a mile of First and M Streets, NE.
There are more than 3,900 new apartments available or under construction to accommodate these people--including Camden NoMa, which has begun leasing 321 apartments. The apartments range from studios to two bedrooms with a den. Rents are from $1,550 square feet to $3,900 square feet. Including Camden NoMa, 1,338 additional units will deliver to NoMa by next summer, bringing the neighborhood's total to 3,945 residential units.
