CHICAGO-Roundy's, the Milwaukee-based parent company of the Mariano's grocery chain, has struck a $36-million deal for the store leases and related assets of 11 Dominick's locations in the Chicago area.
The stores will be converted to Mariano's beginning in the first quarter of 2014. The transaction is expected to close by the end of this month, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dominick's employees will need to reapply for their positions once the locations open as Mariano's stores.
"There is no direct transfer of existing Dominick's employees to the newly acquired Mariano's stores," Roundy's Chairman and CEO Bob Mariano says. "In order to staff these stores, Mariano's will be holding job fairs, as well as accepting applications online at http://www.marianos.com."
Mariano's, which began operations three years ago, has 13 Chicago-area locations and building five new stores that are scheduled to open in 2014. The Dominick's acquisition will give it 29 stores by the end of the next year, with 10 city and 19 suburban locations. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
