NEW YORK CITY-Negotiations centered on settling a lawsuit that would then enable the State University of New York to sell the money-losing Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn broke down late last week.
The stalemate in talks to settle litigation that has prevented SUNY from selling the hospital in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn to one of four bidders occurred on Friday, according to Crain's New York Business.
"This has been very costly for us," said H. Carl McCall, chairman of SUNY's board of trustees. "It was a mistake for SUNY to buy (LICH)."
The four possible buyers qualified for a final round of bidding Feb. 3. Three of the four bidders have proposed to transform the hospital into medical offices and condos. None have offered to keep the facility as a full-service hospital.
Those opposing the sale in court have put as one of their key settlement demands that the facility remains a full-service hospital. See story in Crain's New York Business.
