LOS ANGELES-Last week on "National Wear Red Day," the Ratkovich Co. participated by lighting the exterior of its 5900 Wilshire building in Downtown Los Angeles in the shape of a heart to support women's heart health.
The 5900 Wilshire building was one of a handful of landmark buildings in Los Angeles to light up in the name of heart health. Pylons at the Los Angeles International Airport, the Union Bank Plaza on S. Figueroa Street and the Campus at Playa Vista also participated in "National Wear Read Day" by either lighting up the exterior in a heart shape, like 5900 Wilshire, or lighting the exterior in the color red. The Ratkovich Co. was not available to comment about the event.
Local hospitals also participated in the campaign by donating 2,000 red beanies to February babies rather than the typical blue and pink beanies given to newborns. Huntington Hospital in Pasadena participated as well as several hospitals in Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The "Go Red" movement launched a decade ago to bring awareness and combat heart disease, which is the number one killer of woman—killing more woman than all other cancers. Today, the disease claims the lives of 1,100 women each day. The national campaign has saved more the 650,000 lives in the last decade while encouraging women to lead healthier lifestyles.
The commercial real estate community often lends itself to philanthropic causes. Last November, executives from top-tier firms came together to raise funds and awareness for Padres Contra El Cancer, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of Latino children suffering from cancer. The event raised $30,000 for the charity.
