PHILADELPHIA-The Mormon Church announced plans on Wednesday to build a mixed-use tower building on vacant land near the Vine Street Expressway.
The plan, announced by church leaders and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, calls for the development of a 32-story tower building. The church hopes to develop 258 apartments, 13 townhouses and retail space at 16th and Vine streets, according to the Inquirer. The project is to be built next to the Mormon temple that is already under construction.
The meetinghouse that will be part of the development will be the primary worship space and will include a chapel, courtyard, multipurpose space, and a center to research genealogy, according to Michael Marcheschi, senior real estate manager for the church's national special projects department.
The total cost of the project, which is expected to create between 1,500 to 1,800 jobs, is not yet known. The Mormon Church is not looking to secure any city or state financial assistance in connection with the project See story in the Inquirer.
