WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA—Industry sources report that the Oprah Winfrey Network, a cable channel started three years ago by the iconic actress/talk-show empress, will move from its current location at 5700 Wilshire Blvd. in L.A.'s Miracle Mile neighborhood to the Lot, a nearly 100-year-old active studio at 1041 N. Formosa Ave. here. By the end of the year, OWN will occupy three newly built floors of a five-story building on the historic property as its headquarters.
GlobeSt.com has learned from sources unrelated to the deal that JLL represented both the Lot's landlord, CIM Group, and OWN in the lease transaction for the 60,000-square-foot space. No further details about the deal were disclosed.
Industry sources also report that the move allows the network more freedom in filming since it will now have access to an active studio and on-lot support services including security.
Originally built in about 1918 as a simple film studio by Jesse D. Hampton, the Lot has been passed on to some of the greatest influences in film, including Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and San Goldwyn. It has undergone many changes over the years and now is considered a state-of-the-art facility with full production capabilities, rental offices, sound stages, carpentry facilities, screening rooms and more. Films produced there include “Robin Hood,” “Wuthering Heights,” “Some Like it Hot,” “West Side Story,” “L.A. Confidential” and “The Green Mile.”
As GlobeSt.com reported earlier this month, CIM Group and Denihan Hospitality Group have revealed plans to build the first West Coast location of the James Hotel, and the first ground-up hotel project in West Los Angeles in 30 years. The hotel will be located on a CIM Group Sunset Strip site at the corner of Sunset and La Cienega Blvd. This will be the fourth James Hotel in the country, along with locations in Chicago, New York and Miami.
