PORTLAND, OR—Dozens of workers, elected officials, and communityleaders planned to gather in Portland today to honorWorkers' Memorial Day (April 28) with a ceremonialgroundbreaking of Lloyd District Commons, a newconstruction investment by the AFL-CIO Building InvestmentTrust. Workers' Memorial Day events were held across thecountry to remember those who have suffered and died on the job,and to renew efforts for safe workplaces.
The groundbreaking ceremony was for a new $43.2 millionmultifamily project at 330 Multnomah Street in Portland,that will create hundreds of construction, service, and maintenancejobs performed by highly trained and expert union workers. Theproperty will consist of a six-story structurecontaining 186 rental apartments and 190 parkingspaces. Construction is expected to be completed in July2015.
Lloyd District Commons is adjacent to the ConventionCenter and near the Rose Garden Arena andthe Lloyd Center Mall. The property will alsofeature approximately 3,500 square feet of street-level retailspace. A lease has already been executed with Starbucks (whopreviously operated a drive-thru store on the site) for 1,850square feet of the retail space.
The trust has ten projects currently in development across thecountry. Total development costs for these projects isapproximately $1.1 billion, and they are expectedto create some 5,500 union jobs throughout the course ofconstruction.
Scheduled to attend the event were the Oregon AFL-CIO, theNorthwest Oregon Labor Council, the Columbia Pacific BuildingTrades Council, the Oregon State Building and Construction TradesCouncil (OBTC), the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust, projectdeveloper Legacy Partners Residential, Inc., project managerRembold Companies, PNC Realty Investors, Inc., and the AFL-CIOInvestment Trust Corporation.
