It is often said that it is lonely at the top. For all thetalk in management circles of the importance of top teams, thetruth remains that in just about all organizations, just oneperson—the chief executive officer—is singled out for ultimateresponsibility for everything that goes on.

Just ask Target's former CEO, Gregg Steinhafel, who stepped downyesterday in the wake of one of the largest cyber-attacks duringthe Christmas season. However, as news reports and analysisemerged from the announcement, it appears that Steinhafel was alsobruised by lackluster results from the company's expansion intoCanada and other missteps.

It's tough at the top. According to the Conference Board, theaverage tenure of CEOs is declining from 10 years in 2000 to justeight years in 2012, and the decline continues.
