MIAMI—You might call it a sale of historic proportions. The Old US Post Office in Downtown Miami just sold for $11 million.

Located at 100-118 Northeast 1st Avenue, the nearly 100-year-old building sold to Daniel Pena-Giraldi. The buyer plans to restore the building to its turn-of-the-century grandeur. Metro 1 commercial director Tony Arellano represented the seller.

Metro 1 founder Tony Cho called it a “landmark deal.” He expects the “historic property will be revitalized and again become a focal point of Downtown Miami's dynamic and changing core.”

Constructed over three years, Kiehnel and Elliott and Oscar Wenderoth designed The Old US Post Office. It was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The limestone-clad structure was built in a Classically-inspired Italianate style that dates to 1912. That makes it one of the earliest grand buildings erected in Miami, and almost certainly the only one of its heft that survives from that era.

Though it was outdone in scale 20 years later by the larger Mediterranean-style US courthouse and post office two blocks north as Miami grew, the Old US Post Office retained its prominence after First Federal Savings assumed occupancy. The bank called the building home until 1990. The last tenant, an Office Depot, moved out about eight years ago
