SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco is one of four US cities making the to the US Olympic Committee's short list of bidders for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Boston round the field.

San Francisco mayor Edwin Lee issued a statement after Friday's announcement of the selections.

“I am thrilled by the United States Olympic Committee's expression of support for San Francisco and the Bay Area's potential to bid for and host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Lee said. “The San Francisco Bay Area has a long history of enthusiasm for the Games and for mounting credible and compelling bids to host them in our region. Strong bids for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games demonstrated our City and our region's ability to come together around a shared vision for Olympic and Paralympic sport that would bring lasting benefits to the Bay Area.”

San Diego and Dallas were culled from the list of six. New York and Philadelphia had initially expressed interest, but decided against competing in the 2024 race.

Of the four remaining cities, only Los Angeles has Olympic experience, having hosted the 1932 and 1984 games.

Lee says however, that the Bay Area has a strong case for other reasons.

“We have proven we can successfully host the world's biggest events, including the MLB World Series in 2010 and 2012, the America's Cup in 2013 and Super Bowl 50 in 2016. I believe no place on earth better represents the true values and spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic movements than the San Francisco Bay Area. We are entrepreneurs and innovators in business, art, social justice and sport. We celebrate the power of the individual and draw strength from our diversity.”
