SAN DIEGO—Three area development firms have formed a partnership to develop and manage Makers Quarter, a new urban community in the East Village.

Developer Lankford & Associates, builder Hensel Phelps, and San Diego-based HP Investors, have joined forces with the firms to form L2HP.

L2HP is a co-development partnership that brings together the three companies for the Makers Quarter project in East Village, within downtown San Diego.

“Together, Lankford & Associates, Hensel Phelps and HP Investors will shape future development of this neighborhood with a focus on community engagement, local and regional craftsmanship, sustainable design, open spaces and creation of a vibrant and walkable neighborhood,” said Robert Lankford, president and CEO, Lankford & Associates.

L2HP has been active in engaging the East Village community through the use of tactical urbanism, including the transformation of SILO from a vacant lot into a launch pad to encourage the community to embrace the neighborhood and bring about positive change. In just over one year, SILO has attracted more than 11,500 people to Makers Quarter in East Village.

“HP Investors embraces the vision behind Makers Quarter and we look forward to adding value not only to the project but also to the neighborhood and the entire East Village community,” said Sumeet Parekh, principal, HP Investors. “We're excited to drive new opportunities for the strategic growth of Makers Quarter and to be a part of such an innovative project.”

L2HP says it will work to establish Makers Quarter as an urban neighborhood that serves as a catalyst to enhance and promote linkages throughout downtown San Diego and beyond. Spanning 14th Street to 17th Street, Broadway Avenue to G Street, the neighborhood in the East Village is surrounded by San Diego City College, the East Village and Golden Hill. Makers Quarter will provide connectivity between each of these desirable regions while creating a central quarter for eastern downtown. Makers Quarter will also create connections via transit, housing, jobs, open space and increased density with a vision to merge innovative economies with a strong urban community.
