BETHESDA, MD—Transwestern has recruited Barry Cohen to join its local office as senior vice president of Tenant Advisory Services. He will concentrate in the biotechnology/life sciences and high-tech industry sectors.

Cohen most recently was senior vice president at EDGE Commercial Real Estate, and previously was a principal at TSC Realty Services LLC. He has done deals involving BioVeris Corp., Jane Goodall Institute, Nordstrom, DrinkMore Water, Earth Networks/WeatherBug and Roche Pharmaceuticals.

Cohen was a founding member of Scheer Partners, where he created the firm's biotechnology services division.

His hire is timely given how quickly the life sciences and technology real estate sectors are changing, says Phillip McCarthy, executive managing director and market leader for Transwestern's Mid-Atlantic region. Increasingly these companies are exploring opportunities to create more value from their real estate, "whether they are expanding operations, working through a merger or acquisition, evaluating options to generate cash flow or seeking ideas to make workspaces more comfortable and efficient."
