MILLBURN, NJ—The Millburn Board of Education is considering selling a nearly 33-acre tract of land for a state owned building on Spring Street.

The Board of Education's property committee has recommended that School Superintendent James Crisfield begin talks with the state to acquire the former Millburn Regional Day School. The prospective deal would see the school district sell the 32.6-acre Oakley Tract on Hartshorne Drive for the state-owned building, according to The Item of Millburn and Short Hills.

The Oakey Tract is assessed by the township at $7.14 million. The Bergen County Special Services School District vacated the building on June 30 at the expiration of its lease with the state of New Jersey. The building has been appraised by the state at $3.55 million, according to Schools Business Administrator Steven DiGeronimo.

"I can think of some things that would work very nicely for that building such as a pre-school, and it would free up space in the other buildings for other things," Crisfield says. "But I understand that borrowing money is controversial, and that's the whole reason why we thought we would consider a land swap." See story in The Item of Millburn and Short Hills.
