SALISBURY, MD—Charles "Chuck" Marshall, founder and chairman emeritus of Marshall Hotels & Resorts, died unexpectedly Dec. 27 at age 74, due to complications related to a stroke.
Marshall founded the company in 1980, a period when third-party hotel management was just beginning to emerge as a viable business. He began initially as a developer/syndicator with three hotels and eventually expanded the company to more than 60 hotels and resorts. By the late 1980s, Marshall had shifted the company to full-time third-party management. Today Marshal Hotel & Resorts ranks as the 40th largest overall management company and is in the top 10 of the solely third-party management companies.
Marshall is survived by his wife, Dee, who led the company's marketing efforts for more than three decades; son Mike, who is president of Marshall Hotels & Resorts, daughter Joanne, son Kenny, as well as seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested that friends donate to the Village of Hope or Oklahoma State University School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration.
