MOONACHIE, NJ—The Streit's Matzo factory at 20 Knickerbocker Road here will be expanding production after Passover in April, as the 90-year old company is reported to have told its New York City employees that it has decided to close its landmark matzo factory at 148-154 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side.
The Bowery Boogie, a hyperlocal news website, first reported that Streit's told its employees January 6 that it would be selling the 47,000 square-foot facility to a developer after the 2015 Passover production season. Aaron Gross, one of the three co-owners of the business, told Crain's New York Business that the rising costs of maintaining the aging equipment in the 90-year old New York factory, coupled with foreign competition and offers from real estate developers, made it impossible to continue in the location.
The company will keep all the employees from the Rivington Place factory, Gross told Crain's.
Streit's was the last matzo factory in New York City, according to The Boogie, which learned of the closing from documentary filmmaker Michael Levine, who has been shooting a documentary about the matzo maker for the past two years. Read the Bowery Boogie story here.
