SAN FRANCISCO—Davidson Hotels & Resorts has begun reconstruction of the Radisson Fisherman's Wharf. Upon completion of the renovation, the hotel, which is located on a full city block, will be called Hotel Zephyr and have 361 waterfront rooms that cater to “spirited” upscale travelers who “seek an authentic experience.”
The Pebblebrook Hotel Trust purchased the property in December 2013, for $132 million. The hotel will remain open throughout the renovation process, which is scheduled for completion in the spring of this year. The vision for the project is to bring out the playful personality of the Wharf through an engaging community and welcoming staff. The property will have a nautical theme and will use recycled materials in the design, like corrugated metal and cargo containers to upcycled nautical materials and shipping crates.
“We wanted to create something that would be really fun and interactive—an alternative to the conventional hotels currently on the Wharf—and something with character,” Andrea Dawson Sheehan, art director and CEO of Dawson Design Associates, which is leading the design of the hotel, tells GlobeSt.com. “Really, it is about creating a memorable and magical experience that captured the spirit, enthusiasm and the excitement of visiting the Wharf and possibly California for the first time. We want to evoke that child like since of awe and excitement that comes with a new great adventure. If the guest is not a kid, then we wanted to make them feel like a kid and transport them to the land of Zephyr.”
The 361 guestrooms will feature a waterfront and cityscape views and personal balconies, while the property will feature plenty of communal gathering spaces for guests to lounge, like game areas and lounging areas with outdoor fire pits. “Our design team's inspiration grew from capturing the spirit of rough and rowdy sailors and infusing thematic elements throughout the hotel to create the fresh spirit of Hotel Zephyr,” adds Sheehan.
There is no information at the time about the cost of the hotel project, or how it is being funded, and the owners did not respond to a request for comment. The area around the hotel recently underwent a $4 million city-funded “beautification” project. The property will add to the revitalized area, and attract more tourists.
