WASHINGTON, DC—Lease activity in the area has focused on the District's urban core for various reasons. For one group, proximity to the Capitol has been the main reason, according to JLL. Namely, lobbying operations for the technology industry has been growing its footprint in the District over the years, now reaching 320,000 square feet, Doug Mueller, managing director of Agency Leasing for JLL, tells GlobeSt.com.

This number takes on even more significance considering that ten years ago tech companies were famously disinclined to lobby Washington. Indeed ten years ago, many of the main tenants in JLL's list were either in their start up phases or non-existent.

It is not likely that this number of grow significant higher, Mueller says. Lobbying, unlike say, R&D or manufacturing, only requires so much space to operate. "But this is an important industry and it is a win for DC that it has finally recognized the importance of a local presence."

The top companies with a lobbying presence in DC include Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Oracle, HP, IBM, Amazon, Apple, Yahoo, Cisco, SAP, eBay, Twitter and AOL.
