ORLANDO—I recently read an article in Fast Company about why Millennials understand the future of work better than anyone else. The article concluded that this is a connected generation that understands networks and hubs better than anyone. With that in mind, it's no wonder Millennials are glomming on to coworking office space.
We asked Ben Sutton, vice president at NAI Hunneman, for his thoughts on the coworking scene as it relates to Millennials. He told us companies that are part of the emerging technology industry are pushing workplace trends forward.
“As we help tenants find the right space for them this often includes open or co-working style workspaces, which many employees at startup and tech companies come to expect,” Sutton says. “These spaces are a factor for recruiting too.”
Indeed, he says, Millennial employees especially aren't interested in the stodgy office cubicle of the past, and coworking spaces can facilitate a collaborative, creative environment. As he sees it, this can be a major factor for employees looking for a company culture that aligns with their personal work style.
“Shared spaces are also necessary to grow the start-up ecosystem, which depends on the community aspect coworking and have become a relief valve for overpriced and limited vacancy markets,” Sutton says. And he's not alone in his perspective.
Victor Vizgaitis, principal at Sasaki Associates agrees.
“In general, workplaces are embracing an approach where the whole office can be your workspace,” Vizgaitis says. “Employees are no longer tethered to their desks—and designers can take advantage of every surface to create spaces that are brighter, quieter, or more social depending on what atmosphere works best for the individual or task at hand. Companies find that coworking style workspaces lend themselves particularly well to collaboration, so it's no surprise that this is the type of workspace they're looking for.”
