CARLSBAD, CA—ViaSat, Inc. has purchased 23 acres off El Camino Road and Gateway Road in Carlsbad, from Irvine-based HCP, Inc. with the intention of developing a global headquarters.

Cushman & Wakefield, handled both sides of the deal, and financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. ViaSat was represented by Cushman & Wakefield executive managing director Rick Reeder and managing director Tom van Betten, while Cushman & Wakefield managing directors Aric Starck and Dennis Visser represented HCP.

ViaSat is a broadband services and technology company providing internet service to stream high-bandwidth media and content globally, servicing the consumer, commercial and government sectors. The company operates worldwide with more than 3,700 employees.

HCP, Inc. is a fully-integrated real estate investment trust serving the healthcare industry. The company was the first healthcare REIT included in the S&P 500.

“Interest in Carlsbad is very bullish at the moment,” said Starck. “We are seeing activity across the board from a wide range of companies and speculative developers. Carlsbad has been investors most actively traded submarket in San Diego over the past year. It's no surprise that many of them are turning to ground-up development.”

Land sale activity of Carlsbad commercial and industrial land by a measure of total dollars spent year-to-date has increased 84% from the previous year.
