NEW YORK CITY—Mount Sinai Hospital could extend its scope of services further to Long Island in the near future, although the deal would require $120 million in investment.

South Nassau Communities Hospital's Board of Directors has agreed to enter exclusive discussions with New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System on a possible affiliation agreement.

Mount Sinai has agreed to what it describes as a “significant investment in the physical plant and clinical programs” at the 455-bed hospital in Oceanside, NY. A South Nassau hospital spokesman tells Globest.com that Mount Sinai's affiliation proposal calls for Mount Sinai to supply $120 million in capital support to South Nassau Communities Hospital.

While the affiliation agreement will allow for continued local control of South Nassau, if the deal is finalized it would mark a significant expansion for Mount Sinai on Long Island.

The two institutions have signed a non-binding letter of intent, which will allow South Nassau and Mount Sinai to begin an in-depth due diligence period and exclusive discussions. If the boards of Mount Sinai and South Nassau approve an affiliation deal, the accord would also have to be green-lighted by the New York State Department of Health. The process could take until the end of the year to complete, hospital officials state.

Mount Sinai's president and CEO, Kenneth L. Davis, MD, said, “South Nassau will become the flagship tertiary hospital for the Mount Sinai Health System on Long Island. And South Nassau will also become a major clinical and academic affiliate of the Icahn School of Medicine. We are looking forward to a long and fruitful affiliation that will enhance services for all residents of Long Island.”

South Nassau, a non-profit medical center and teaching hospital, has 3,500 employees and 900 affiliated physicians and is one of the few remaining independently controlled hospitals on Long Island. The hospital is the only trauma center on the South Shore of Nassau County and provides services to approximately 900,000 South Shore residents.

South Nassau's president and CEO Richard J. Murphy says of the affiliation discussions with Mount Sinai, “This is the correct move at the right time and if a formal affiliation agreement is reached, it will translate into a higher level of care being available for the communities we serve on Long Island.”

Joseph Fennessy, chairman of South Nassau's Board of Directors, adds, “South Nassau has continued to advance its clinical capabilities over the past several years as it strives to provide a higher level of care to the communities we serve. This affiliation will accelerate this process dramatically.”

The $8-billion Mount Sinai Health System includes the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, seven hospitals in the New York metropolitan area and a network of more than 7,000 physicians. The system employs approximately 7,100 primary and specialty care physicians; and operates 12 joint-venture ambulatory surgery centers; more than 140 ambulatory practices throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester County, Long Island, and Florida; and 31 affiliated community health centers.
