Miami Dade Commission Picks Civil Courthouse Site

The property was not Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s first choice, who had pushed to build the courthouse next to the Children’s Courthouse.

MIAMI—The Miami-Dade Commission in a unanimous vote earlier this week selected a half-acre parcel cross Northwest First Avenue on a parking lot and park space for the new Miami-Dade County civil courthouse.

Miami-Dade Chief Circuit Judge Bertila Soto says the project site west of the Flagler Street building conforms with a master plan, according to a recent article by Globest.com sister publication, ALM’s Daily Business Review. However, the property was not Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s first choice, who had pushed to build the courthouse next to the Children’s Courthouse.

The commission’s 10-0 vote followed years of wrangling and behind-the-scenes work by the legal community to replace the Miami-Dade County Courthouse. In 2014, voters rejected a $390-million bond proposal to finance a new civil courthouse.
