SAN FRANCISCO—Starbucks Coffee Co. took the opportunity at theGlobal Action Summit on Thursday to announce a “Starbucks GreenerStores” framework and a commitment to design, build and operate10,000 “Greener Stores” globally by 2025.

Company officials say the framework will be built uponcomprehensive performance criteria that help ensure the company'sapproach to designing, building, and operating its company-ownedstores sets a new standard for green retail. Starbucks will develop in the next year anaccredited program to audit all existing company-operated stores inthe U.S. and Canada against the framework criteria. The programwill then set out to develop 10,000 “Greener Stores” globally by2025. That total will encompass existing stores, new builds andrenovations.
