Is Amazon Scaling Back on its Seattle Expansion?

Amazon is looking to sublet 30 floors of previously leased office space in the metro area, fueling speculation that the e-commerce giant is scaling back on its Seattle expansion.

Amazon looks to be pulling back from expansion in the Seattle area beyond its headquarters location.

SEATTLE—Amazon is looking to sublet 30 floors of previously leased office space in the metro area, according to GeekWire. This is fueling speculation that the e-commerce giant is scaling back on its Seattle expansion.

The pullback follows the cancellation of Amazon’s Long Island City, NY HQ2 location after the company faced significant opposition to its demands. Rather than select another location, Amazon indicated that it planned to work within existing locations.

An Amazon spokesperson says the company has “more than 9,000 open roles in Seattle and will continue to evaluate future growth,” reports GeekWire. However, last year, Amazon laid off hundreds of area employees and was involved in local regulation entanglements.
