Upper Marlboro and Temple Hills, MD—Avanath Capital Management recently launched Activate, an on-site program focused on increasing health awareness and education while promoting an active lifestyle. The program is popular with residents and appeals to investors as well because it fulfills Avanath’s social-impact fiduciary duties, according to Ada Arevalo, VP of fund management and Impact Investing committee chair.

Rolled out at two senior communities— Vistas at Lake Largo in Upper Marlboro, Md., and Manor at Victoria Park in Temple Hills, Md., Activate’s services include exercise and fitness classes, healthy cooking classes, and quarterly social events focused on encouraging resident interaction. It also offers blood sugar testing, cholesterol testing and blood pressure and classes on topics such as medication management, cholesterol management, diabetes management, fall prevention and balancing and healthy eating habits.

“By 2030, all of the baby boomers will be over 65 years old. A lot of our seniors are healthier and living longer. They want to be able to maintain their health and activity level,” Arevalo tells GlobeSt.com. “Most 55+ adults are still young, active and volunteering. We have found that social engagement in the senior population leads to longer lives.”

As part of the program, Avanath has converted previously underutilized community space into a wellness facility that includes screening rooms with exam tables, medical supplies, medical exam equipment and other necessary items that allow providers to administer health exams.

“Seniors thrive in communities that offer holistic wellness programs like Activate,” says Arevalo.
