June Cargo Volumes Fall Short at Port

The cargo activity was healthy last month, but did not top the record-breaking June in 2018 at the Port of Long Beach.

Cargo volumes at the Port of Long Beach surpasses 677,000 TEUs in the month of June. While the cargo activity was strong, it did not surpass the record-breaking June in 2018—which was the busiest month in the port’s 108-year history.

In June, the port handled a total of 677,167 TEUs, which was a 10% decrease over June 2018. While cargo volumes decreased, June 2019 was still the second-best June for the Port.

The decrease in cargo activity is likely due to the tariffs. Last year, cargo volumes increased as retailers aimed to beat the tariffs. Early ordering is now impacting cargo activity this year.
