How to Build a Career

I ASSUME THAT ANYONE READING THIS IS well aware of the many great attributes that a career in commercial real estate can offer. What I won’t assume is that anyone reading this knows how to craft a strategy to build and develop a career in commercial real estate. Generally speaking, younger professionals usually need some guidance in how to navigate the ins and outs of the corporate world, but that is especially so for commercial real estate, where so much of the deal-making and industry knowledge is traded first hand, through relationships.

We tell you exactly how to build those relationships in our cover feature, “The Climb Up the Brokerage Ladder.” Even if you are not starting out, it is well worth a read as we also visit tips that well serve those in their mid-career years.

This issue also has our 50 Under 40 awards, in which we highlight 50 individuals under the age of 40 that have made significant accomplishments in their respective fields or companies. These are the superstars who stand out from the pack and will likely be at the helm of the organizations of the future.

We also do a similar examination in the multifamily space. “Multifamily’s New Toolbox” takes a look at some of the tools and strategies multifamily owners are using now to remain ahead of developments occurring in the asset class. We follow that with the latest in our Influencer series, which covers the apartment community. There you can read about the individuals, teams and companies that have made a difference, forging new strategies, executing well-laid plans, entering new markets and introducing novel concepts.

Finally, there is our examination of senior housing and the influx of new investors entering the market. The investor profile for this category is changing to the private sector and as these companies move into the space they are wisely partnering with operators and navigating other sector-specific risks.

We hope you enjoy this issue.
