Tariffs Impact Port Cargo Volumes

Despite the decrease in cargo volumes at the Port of Long Beach, October was among the top performing month.

The Port of Long Beach had its second busiest month of October this year. Cargo volumes at the port totaled 688,425 TEUs during the month, a 2.4% decrease over October 2018 cargo volumes.

Despite the strong performance, the tariffs and trade disputes are impacting the port’s activity. The Port moved 6,366,787 TEUs during the first 10 months of 2019, 5.4% down from last year’s record-setting pace.

Exports lead the activity, increasing 9.8% this year, while imports dipped 7.4% to 337,062 TEUs. Empty containers delivered overseas to be filled with goods decreased 0.8% to 219,728 TEUs.
