WASHINGTON DC – Whole Foods Market has signed a 40,000-square-foot lease at The Hartley within the Parks at Walter Reed in Washington DC.

The natural and organic grocer will anchor the 66-acre master planned community from Hines, Urban Atlantic and Triden Development Group, which is currently the largest site under development in Northwest Washington DC.

The transaction serves as the latest addition to the transformation of the former Walter Reed medical campus.

Located in the Town Center, The Hartley will feature 58,000 square feet of retail and 323 rental units, including 32 affordable units. As the third new construction phase to commence on site, The Hartley will follow The Brooks, offering 89 condominium residences, and the Vale, offering 301 apartment and 18,000 square feet of retail, which are currently underway.

Construction on The Hartley is projected to begin in early 2020, with completion slated for early 2022. Torti Gallas Urban has been retained as the architect for The Hartley, while Hickok Cole Lifestyle will provide interior design services and Oehme van Sweden will provide landscape design services.

The Parks at Walter Reed will offer 3.1 million square feet of new construction and adaptive reuse of historic structures, upon completion. The firms are aiming to reimagine the historic military medical campus into a mixed-use destination of public parks, recreation, residential, office, medical and educational offerings, to meet the needs of the neighborhood and the city.

CBRE+Streetsense has been retained for the development’s retail brokerage services.

A privately-owned global real estate investment, development and management firm founded in 1957, Hines currently holds $124.3 billion in assets under management, with a presence in 23 countries.

Founded in 1998, Urban Atlantic specializes in investing and developing transformational, large-scale urban communities. Headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan area, the firm handles a portfolio of more than $2 billion in completed real estate developments.

Triden Development Group, established in 2004, provides development, equity investment and advisory services related to infrastructure, retail, community benefits and custom project assignments. The firm serves as a development partner on more than $7 billion of mixed-use projects.
