Florida Continues to Draw New Yorkers in High Numbers

Tampa, Miami and Orlando are the primary destinations for an area dubbed, the Empire State’s “Sixth Borough.”

What’s not to like about moving to Florida. New Yorkers are finding plenty of joy when making such a move: great weather and beaches, no state income or payroll taxes, and a business-friendly regulatory environment for many entrepreneurs.

Some have coined it the Empire State’s “sixth borough.”

PlacerAI finds that since January 2018, more than 140,000 people from the greater New York area – or the New York-Newark-Jersey City CBSA – have made Florida their home.

“This trend intensified in the wake of COVID, as office closures and expanding work-from-home opportunities freed people up to seek cheaper housing and improved living standards outside the city,” PlacerAI’s Ben Witten writes.

Tampa, Miami, Orlando Top Destinations

Major metropolitan areas such as Tampa, Miami, and Orlando, were primary recipients, all of which have experienced a significant rise in home prices and apartment rents.

GlobeSt.com earlier this week reported that, according to Redfin data, that while Sacramento was the top migration destination in November, half of the top 10 destination cities were in Florida, with Miami and Tampa ranked No. 3 and 4.

PlacerAI said Tampa is desired for its high level of quality of life.

Traffic to Miami is primarily during winter. The New Yorkers flocking to Miami hail from areas that are wealthier than those going to Tampa, which has contributed to the success of luxury shopping hubs like the Miami Design District.

Orlando experienced the greatest COVID-induced shifts in migration patterns, and traffic there is highest in August.
