More People Moving to Virginia, Alabama

Texas and Florida remain the top choices for people moving within the US.

It would be challenging to top the migration volume that U-Haul says happened in 2021, but 2022 remained active and mostly kept the same favorite destinations as the year before.

Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, and the Southwest continue to see solid growth. Virginia and Alabama were the biggest risers among states in 2022, climbing 26 spots from their respective 2021 rankings.

The company still has areas with strong demand for one-way rentals, according to its international president, John “J.T.” Taylor.

“While overall migration in 2021 was record-breaking, we continue to experience significant customer demand to move out of some geographic areas to destinations at the top of our growth list,” Taylor said in prepared remarks.

Trips to the Southeast and Southwest “were amplified and accelerated” during the pandemic and that continued, the moving firm said, “although overall DIY moves slowed slightly in most states from the record-breaking number of moves in 2021,” according to a release.

People Leaving West Coast, Illinois, NY

Demand for equipment out of California, Illinois, and New York remained strong in 2022, as more people opted to leave areas of the West Coast, Northeast, and Midwest.

California and Illinois ranked 50th and 49th, respectively, on the U-Haul Growth Index for the third consecutive year, meaning those states saw the greatest net losses of one-way U-Haul trucks.

South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona, Georgia, Ohio, and Idaho round out the top 10 growth states.
