CBRE Chooses Emitwise for Greenhouse Gas Data Collection

In addition, CBRE is investing in the vendor.

CBRE announced a strategic partnership with carbon accounting software provider Emitwise to collect greenhouse gas emissions data from its supply chain and provide carbon accounting capabilities to its suppliers..

As part of the partnership, CBRE will make a strategic investment in Emitwise, but the firm did not specify the amount.

The form of the notification is of particular interest as it comes from CBRE itself and not from the vendor, a more usual form of marketing. It suggests the topic is of particular interest to the larger corporation. ESG, whether considered all together or focused just on environmental factors such as greenhouse gas and carbon footprint reductions, has become an increasingly important consideration for many investors and tenants.

“Decarbonizing supply chains requires breakthroughs in using technology and data in new ways to simplify the challenges of managing complex value chains,” said Robert Bernard, CBRE chief sustainability officer in prepared remarks. “We are excited to partner with Emitwise to help our clients reduce their carbon impact and support our efforts to decarbonize our own supply chain.”

Emitwise says that it works in a three-step process to reach scope 3 measurement. Carbon measurement happens in three parts. Scope 1 refers to carbon that a company releases through its own activities. Scope 2 adds emissions from energy use. Scope 3 includes indirect emissions from a company’s supply chain. Most measurements of greenhouse gasses include the first scope and maybe the second. Scope 3 is difficult to contend with and often not addressed by software systems.

“Our core carbon accounting process aligns with two internationally established methodologies, ISO 14064 and The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard,” Emitwise states on its website. “Both encourage an assessment of scopes 1, 2 and 3 alongside which our platform enables you to do.”

Emitwise says that its systems can automate continuous data flows from a client company, its suppliers, and external sources.
