HUD's Julia Gordon Calls for Boost in Housing Supply and Quality

"We've expanded the loan limit and removed the dollar cap on LIHTC loans.“

SAN DIEGO—“We want to see an increase in the supply of housing and we want to see better housing,” stated the Honorable Julia Gordon, Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, during the opening session of the recent MBA CREF24 conference held here in San Diego.

Gordon provided an overview of HUD’s overarching mission, highlighting their focus over the past year on finalizing policies and executing them. “We’ve expanded the loan limit and removed the dollar cap on LIHTC loans. Additionally, on the healthcare side, we’ve issued a set of new documents pertaining to both residential care and hospitals,” she said.

Emphasizing the agency’s role as a partner, Gordon said, “Much of our attention has been directed towards streamlining processes to better align with your needs. It’s important to note that HUD and FHA operate within the confines of the federal budget process. Our objective isn’t and can’t be market share; we’re not engaged in competition in the same sense. Our mandate is to offer programs when equivalent alternatives aren’t available, which sets us apart. Rest assured, we’re always available when needed.”

Looking ahead to the next year, Gordon outlined ongoing priorities, stating, “We anticipate continued efforts in various areas, with a continued emphasis on process enhancements. Asset management will be a significant focus; the challenges posed by Covid have left too many properties in substandard conditions. Addressing this is important since those properties reflect the program’s reputation as a whole.” She also added that the agency is committed to promoting energy efficiency and climate resilience.”
