Ropes & Gray is growing its presence in New York after securing a new lease deal for an office space in what remains a key market for the company.

The global law firm's lease, carrying a term of 20 years, will give it 535,000 square feet at 1285 Avenue of the Americas. In 2028, the Boston-based firm plans to relocate to the new offices in Midtown.

RXR is the landlord of the property, also known as the “The Equitable Building,” which spans nearly 1.8 million square feet.

Ropes hopes the New York expansion will combine connectivity, innovation, and collaboration for its clients. More than 500 of the company's 1,650 lawyers are based in New York. During the last 10 years, Ropes said it has nearly doubled its amount of attorneys at its New York office.

“New York serves as a strategic hub for our firm, our local clients as well as many of our global clients," Julie Jones, chair of Ropes, said in a statement.

"We have experienced tremendous growth in this important city by dedicating ourselves to providing top-tier legal services to these clients and by recruiting many of the best lawyers in the New York market."

According to Placer.ai data, National office occupancy remains 34 percent below October 2019 levels — but the rate is the highest it's been since February 2020. New York has led one of the strongest recoveries for the sector — with offices in the city 86.2 percent occupied of their pre-pandemic levels.
